Lee Berlin Charles was arrested on Monday, Sept. 23, on charges of DUI, reckless driving, inferring with an officer and driving with a suspended license for a crash that occurred on May 25 on Smith Ridge Road in New Canaan, said New Canaan Police Lt. Jason Ferraro.

When officers responded to the crash, they smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from Charles as he told them he was not the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash, Ferraro said.

An investigation determined that Charles had actually caused the crash by failing to stop at a stop sign, causing three additional vehicles to crash, Ferraro said.

He also provided emergency personnel and hospital officials with a different name.

Following the investigation, a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was released following processing and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, Oct. 3.
